Plant Spotlight: Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)

Another beautiful succulent that is actually beginner friendly is the jade plant.  If you want an evergreen plant that is truly hard to kill, look no further than the jade plant. Here are some care tips to keep your jade plant thriving.

How much sunlight does a jade plant need? Jade plants are incredibly low maintenance and forgiving of light conditions. They thrive in bright light about 1-5 feet from a sunny window. They require approximately 4-6 hours of gentle sunlight daily. Optimal illumination produces compact growth and rich green coloration. Leggy growth indicates insufficient light exposure.

How often should you water a jade plant? As a succulent, jade plants possess exceptional water-storage capabilities in their thick leaves. The critical watering principle is moderation. During active growing seasons (spring and summer), I recommend watering 20% of the volume of the pot every 10 days. Leaves will turn pruney or become soft with improper watering. You will know your jade plant is happy if its leaves are plump.

What kind of soil does a jade plant need? Exceptional drainage is paramount. I recommend utilizing a specialized cactus or succulent potting mix, preferably augmented with perlite and coarse sand. This composition will ensure optimal root health by preventing moisture retention and potential root rot.

How often does a jade plant need to be repotted? Jade plants demonstrate remarkable root-bound tolerance. I believe repotting every 2-3 years is typically sufficient. Early spring represents the ideal repotting period, selecting containers marginally larger than the current vessel.

How do you guard jade plants against pests? Mealybugs represent the primary pest concern. I suggest implementing regular visual inspections and utilizing 70% isopropyl alcohol for targeted treatment. On the preventative side, I’d include maintaining appropriate air circulation and adhering to precise watering practices.

How do you propagate jade plants? You can easily propagate any stems you have cut off to make your existing plant look fuller! Peel off at least 6 leaves from the bottom of the stem, and stick the newly exposed portion back into the soil. It will start to root on its own.

Can I turn jade plants into Bonsai? Jade plants make beautiful bonsai trees and are easy to shape with regular pruning and branch training with bonsai wire. They are great for beginners who are just starting out with bonsai.

Troubleshooting leggy growth: A common issue with jade plants is leggy growth due to inconsistent sun exposure. To promote fuller growth, I recommend generously pruning your jade plant’s branches or stems during the growing season, and placing the plant closer to the window. Jade plants are fast growers so you should notice new leaves sprouting within two weeks. That said, sometimes leggy growth can create lovely long cascading stems around your pot, creating interesting shapes. This completely depends on your aesthetic!
